TED Talk: How Science Can Explain Spirituality And Mystical Experiences

Jeff Lieberman, an MIT-trained artist, scientist and engineer, makes a scientific argument for mystical experience. He asks us to challenge our perception of what we are, our relationship to the universe, and our relationship to one another. Our minds are “thought-generating machines.” What we would happen if we could turn off the machine? If we could transcend our individual experience of the world?

    1. What of it?

If life had no meaning then why would humans (& dolphins for that matter) enjoy sex?

If life has no meaning then why do people seek liberation?

Nihilism, to me, is a vain privilege. Life is probably the most precious entropy and our experience is either pain or pleasure, benefit or harm, symbiotic or parasitic, so which blend of experiences would an individual prefer? Therein is meaning: the determination of will.
