Lama Surya Das, the most highly trained American lama in the Tibetan tradition, presents the definitive book on Western Buddhism for the modern-day spiritual seeker.

The radical and compelling message of Buddhism tells us that each of us has the wisdom, awareness, love, and power of the Buddha within; yet most of us are too often like sleeping Buddhas. In
Awakening the Buddha Within, Surya Das shows how we can awaken to who we really are in order to lead a more compassionate, enlightened, and balanced life.  It illuminates the guidelines and key principles embodied in the noble Eight-Fold Path and the traditional Three Enlightenment Trainings common to all schools of Buddhism:

Wisdom Training: Developing clear vision, insight, and inner understanding—seeing reality and ourselves as we really are.

Ethics Training: Cultivating virtue, self-discipline, and compassion in what we say and do.

Meditation Training: Practicing mindfulness, concentration, and awareness of the present moment.

With lively stories, meditations, and spiritual practices,
Awakening the Buddha Within is an invaluable text for the novice and experienced student of Buddhism alike.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

If you dropped the Buddha into a modern metropolis, would he come off sounding like a 16th-century morality play or more like a drive-time disc jockey? Lama Surya Das doesn't spin platters for a living, but he does have a hip delivery that belies his years of sheltered training in Buddhist monasteries. In Awakening the Buddha Within, he borrows a time-tested bestseller format for a 2,500-year-old tradition that comes off as anything but ancient. With the "Five T's of Concentration," the question of "need or greed," and the story of the monk who bares his backside to prove a point, Surya Das invokes a path of wisdom that is as accessible and down-to-earth as a worn pair of loafers. It's not an easy path--it demands thought, effort, and discipline. But Surya Das is there for you, lighting the way to wisdom training, coaxing you into ethics training, and laying out step by step the path of meditation training. And if that's not enough to get you to live in the now, consider these words of the enlightened lama: "You must be present to win." --Brian Bruya

This is an excellent book. Very well written, in plain simple English with no complicated concepts to try to wrap your mind around. This is the first book I've read by Lama Surya Das, but based on this one, it will not be my last.

Intended to be a guide to Tibetan Buddhism, it goes systematically and throughly through all the necessary practices and beliefs to enable the reader to make the changes to put themselves on the path to enlightenment. The book is written with humour and insight by a Westerner who has spent 35 years studying and teaching Buddhism.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to get a grasp on Buddhism from a Western perspective. This is not only a good book for a beginner, but also very complete. A good read.

I first read part of this about 6-7 years ago. Although I agreed with all of the ideas and ideals of Buddhism presented, I did not commit myself to the path but I called myself a Buddhist. I am now reading the entire book, getting much more out of it and dedicating myself to the Buddhist path. I was raised as a Christian but did not find meaning in that faith and proceeded to do a lot of searching, checking out Daoism, Sufism, astrology, spiritualism, psychism and all sorts of other ideas.
Lama Surya Das, although accused of presenting "Buddhism Lite," knows what he is talking about, having spent many years mediating and learning from Tibetan lamas. This is a well written, clear, practical and easy to understand introduction to Buddhism. That doesn't mean it's an easy read. There is a huge amount of information and explanation so you can't just swallow it whole. It takes time to absorb and once you begin to begin to practice it, your understanding deepens. We all have to start where we are and no one becomes enlightened overnight. Any effort you make is worth it. No matter what your religion or lack of it, you can benefit from the ideas presented.

I have had an interest in Buddhism for quite some time and have only recently begun to study and research. It is a daunting, but exciting task. In this time I have read many books on the subject. Some left me so confused I was ready to give up. The Buddha Within was a delight to read......clear, insightful, informative, humorous, but most of all it left me encouraged to continue practicing and studying. This last copy I purchased is for my sister, who has just started being curious about what I'm doing. It is a perfect book for her to start with. I am re-reading it for the second time. A definite must have in your book collection on Buddhism.

I purchased this book after my brother passed. A friend who lost his father - suddenly, suggested it! I love the message, but following the read is a bit difficult. The vocabulary and terminology was difficult for me to follow. I did over all enjoy the message!

This is a tremendous discussion of the basics of Buddhism. Surya Das introduces the first teachings of the Buddha in a very compelling way that resonates with my western life. Others have given good reviews on the content of this book so I won't try to do better. If you are wondering "what is Buddhism?" or "how do I incorporate Buddhist teachings into my life?", this book is an excellent place to start. I have read it three times and get something different each time, based on my situation and my level of understanding at the time. This is definitely a book to come back to over and over again to keep circling deeper into what Buddhism really means.

This book "Awakening The Buddha Within" by Lama Surya Das and Anne Bancroft's "The Buddha Speaks" are two of the best books written to guide you and free yourself of all that is deterring you from your awakening and enlightenment. Both books are equal in the value of their teachings. In some cases they may take a different perspective but still have the basic goal in mind for the follower at the end. I have found much peace within, and my thirst is unquenchable, even at this early stage. You have to be open to realization, which may or may not be how you've perceived it. You can either work towards getting 100% out of the teachings or nothing at all. Its up to you....MO

Lama Surya Das is a Western Buddhist activist in that he grew up in the United States and then studied the Eastern religious concepts and beliefs, thereby becoming a practicing Buddhist. His approach is to blend Eastern understanding of the Buddhist teachings into the Western context so that the benefit of Eastern philosophy can be utilized by Westerners, invoking the flow, calm and wisdom of living life left by earlier teachers or avatars to the world, wherever a person is while experiencing the events of life. This book studies the process and acquisition of altering life patterns that lead toward achieving enlightenment. A helpful, easy to understand presentation.

This book is truely a wonderful masterpiece of work. For those who are searching, for those who have found and for everybody else, it's a must read and a keeper on the shelf. I have bought a few copies for friends as gifts and have been pleased to know they love it as much as I do. As we all struggle in life with things we can not control, and learn to know what things we can control, this book helps guide us in figuring out a way in which to grow from everything we experience, good and/or bad. I think of Awakening the Buddha as a Modern bible without all of the references to any specific God... but more of a spiritual being that lives in all of us, always there to be uncovered when the pupil is ready..

You will never regret this purchase, and you will pick it up again from time to time to remind you of your Buddha nature.

What a Fab book. Written by a westerner who traveled to learn Buddhism and then took it back to the western part of the world, I have found it a down to earth, well written book. It provides loads of information which helps you with the history of the religion and how it came to be as well as what all the words mean and the beliefs. It flows well and you learn more than you realise you are doing because it is an easy read. The language is straightforward and not flowery which would have put me off. In the descriptions, explanation and information you feel enriched anyway. I do not feel overawed by all the Buddhist terms now (or the people who use them). I can choose to use the Buddhist words or stick to the western words. It is written in short chapters and so it is easy to read a small amount if that is all you have time for, or several chapters. It is easy to stop and I enjoy stopping to reflect and let it sink in. It is easy to read. It does have some lovely poems which i have used when taking a mindfulness session.

A fantastic book. excellent information and well written. I really enjoyed ready this book and recommend it. My only complaint if I have to have one, is that the author occasionally rambled and I had to stop and re-read paragraphs just because they didn't seem to really say anything. The author made me feel at home and comfortable with his words. Definitely an informative and comforting book.
