Six Of The Best Female Scientists Who Were Never Recognized For Their Work

March the 8th – we’re all familiar with Women’s day. A day attributing marvelous women who made an impact on the world. Sadly, along the way, many records were either swept under the mat or snatched by others taking claim to fame. Quite often, men would take claim for a woman’s work, there was an era where this was clearly an acceptable thing to do.

There are six particularly notable women who made a change we cannot forget:

1. Jocelyn Bell Burnell

Irish Astrophysicist, student of astronomy, architect and designer of the Planetarium in Northern Ireland. Receiving her PhD in Astronomy at Cambridge in 1969, assisting in the construction and design a telescope. One that would later on discover radio pulsars – the leftovers of massive stars.

On discovery, she noted that not only did these massive stars explode, but they left spinning stars behind them. She was also the first to observe and analyze them. Unfairly, her supervisor, Anthony Hewish and his colleague Martin Ryle received the 1974 Nobel Prize, even though her name along with her peers appeared in the academic publication which disclosed their discoveries.shutterstock_228747796

Turning into complete outrage when she snubbed Nobel, her response on the subject in 1977 was quite something:

“There are several comments that I would like to make on this: First, demarcation disputes between supervisor and student are always difficult, probably impossible to resolve. Secondly, it is the supervisor who has the final responsibility for the success or failure of the project. We hear of cases where a supervisor blames his student for a failure, but we know that it is largely the fault of the supervisor.

It seems only fair to me that he should benefit from the successes, too. Thirdly, I believe it would demean Nobel Prizes if they were awarded to research students, except in very exceptional cases, and I do not believe this is one of them. Finally, I am not myself upset about it — after all, I am in good company, am I not!”

2. Ada, the Countess of Lovelace

Fearing that her daughter would follow in her father’s footsteps, Anne Isabella Byron pressed her daughter Ada to devote her life to the decidedly unpoetic world of mathematics.

What Happens When You Eye Gaze With A Stranger: An Eye Opening Experiment

In a time where nationality trumps humanity, we need to remember to take a step back and realize that the borders have been put up by a bunch of land-hungry xenophobes. We’re told to be scared of what we could find on the other side of a figurative line, and in this we completely forget it is one of our brothers or sisters standing there.

Sp, take all the prejudgments away and strip the interaction down to two people sitting across from each other, simply making eye-contact. The beauty and intensity rises as the window of the soul opens up.  By the simple action of looking into a person’s eyes, feelings mingle in midair while not even one word is being said.shutterstock_387682615

Suddenly you realize, you see yourself in the person in front of you. A fellow human being that functions as a mirror.

A connection is made, while you truly get to see the person in front of you. We tend to look around, do multiple things at the same time. But really seeing and taking the world in, is an ability that gets lost in this fast flow we live in nowadays. Continue reading

How to Stimulate Your Endorphins – The Body’s Natural Opiates

Have you ever heard of “runner’s high”?

It is the euphoric high you sometimes get after a hard workout. Endorphins are responsible for this, and many other positive effects.

Endorphins Are Opiates Produced by Your Body

The name endorphins comes from the term endogenous morphine. Endogenous means that they are produced by your body.

shutterstock_317205041Like other opiates (e.g. medical morphine and heroin), endorphins’ main task is to mask pain. [1] The most well-known endorphin is 18 to 33 times more potent than morphine. [2] It is, however, produced in fairly small quantities.

Endorphins helped early humans escape from lions and other dangers in prehistoric times, because they let you run fast and long without getting overwhelmed by pain. Continue reading

4 Reasons Why Swearing Can Be Beneficial For Your Health

A common trait that most adults share, regardless of race or location, is that we swear. Whether it is a frequent occurrence to pepper your conversations with expletives, or if you only say them on rare occasions, you are experiencing some pretty good side-effects.

Some people might frown upon swearing, and think it is degrading, oafish behaviour- but it’s not. Well, not always. Swearing has some good aspects as well, and the act of saying a “bad word” can have many unexpected benefits.

1. Relieves pain and increases pain tolerance.shutterstock_274692137
If you are a “chain-swearer,” or someone who uses swear words like a sailor who was trained by Andrew Dice Clay, then you are probably not going to experience this benefit as much as someone who speaks them only a few times a day.

For the latter,  they will experience a surge of adrenaline when the ‘fight or flight’ response is activated, from swearing.

This triggers and analgesic effect, and can effectively alter our pain perception.

2. Control and confidence.
Swearing can help us to release our fears and gain control over our feelings in certain situations. When we swear, we are showing ourselves that we are not powerless and can fight back- even if it is with mere words.

Saying a swear word can give you confidence, especially if you rarely use them. Like Mark Twain said, ‘When angry, count to four; when very angry, swear.’shutterstock_175843565

3. Self-expression.
When something is important to you, swearing can elevate that feeling and let others know as well. Take  football games for example.

Fans swear all the time to express outrage towards the referees, or immense joy when their team scores. Swearing  allows you to express yourself in ways that suit your moods and emotions, whether they be good or bad.

4. Mental and physical health.
“Sentence enhancers,” as I like to call them, can do some things of which you might not be aware.  Psychology Today says, “The health benefits of swearing include increased circulation, elevated endorphins, and an overall sense of calm, control, and well-being. ”

It is important to keep in mind that we are all unique individuals and people who swear are not less of anything because they do so. They are not less spiritual, less intelligent, or less imaginative. Keep your judgments to yourself, and let people live their lives in the ways that works best for them.

Besides, it’s good for you.

This 15 Year Old Boy Discovered A Lost Mayan City By Using Google Maps

Using Google Earth and a simple star chart, 15 year old Canadian teen, William Gadoury has discovered what he believes to be the lost ruins of an ancient Mayan City. Based in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, he may just be right!

“The Mayans were extremely good builders, but they often built in places that made little practical sense — far from rivers, far from fertile areas,” – he explained to CBC News.

As many scientists and historians have discussed, he believes that the Mayans built their cities in correspondence with the stars.

This was compared to 22 Mayan constellations where ruins have already been found. As noted, 117 Mayan ruins do in fact match their ancient star charts.

This all started when he realized that out of all of these constellations, the 23rd didn’t seem to have a match. He decided that if all the previous findings were anything to go by, there must be a lost city out there! Continue reading
