Modern Depression Is A Symptom of Our Society

Depression, or Major Depressive Disorder, is the number one cause of disability in the world for people aged 5 years or older. Approximately 1 in 8 children suffer from depression in the United States, and a total of about 14.8 million American adults have been diagnosed with the disorder. That’s a lot of people, and the number is frighteningly high when you consider depression is the main contributor to suicide, which claims more than a million lives per year.

Depression takes the most basic things we find joy in, and hides them away behind the shadows of sadness. Sleep, energy, focus, memory, and even libido are stolen from us. The loss of these simple necessities can destroy a person’s desire to love, play, work, and most notably, their will to live.dealing-with-distress-discouragement-and-spiritual-depression091911

In a recent TED Talk, Stephen Ilardi said, “Depression lights up the pain circuitry of the brain- to such an extent that it’s torment, it’s agony, it’s torture. And many begin to look to death, as a welcome means of escape.”

Ilardi, author of The Depression Cure, explains further to help us to understand what depression really is, what is really causing it, and how to make it really disappear.

Similar to our flight-or-flight response, the brain has what Ilardi refers to as a “runaway stress response.” He believes depression to be the result of prolonged exposure to this specific response. See, when our ancestors were faced with vicious predators or life-threatening dangers, the fight-or-flight response evolved to assist them with these situations. When the fight-or-flight response was answered with a feeling of safety, or security, the brain and body reverted to a state of reduced-stress. This reversion could only take place after the runaway stress response triggered intense physical activity, which could last for a few seconds or a few hours.

“The problem is for many people throughout the Western world, the stress response goes on for weeks, months and even years at a time, and when it does that, it’s incredibly toxic to the body and the brain,” Ilardi said.

The conditions in which we live today are extremely stressful, and this contributes to society’s rapid decline in health. Modern-day life disrupts our brain’s helpful chemicals, like dopamine and serotonin, which can cause sleep deprivation, brain damage, inhibited immune response, and inflammation. This finding led Ilardi to another fascinating discovery: “Depression is a disease of civilization.”sad-man-with-umbrella-walking-in-a-lonely-street-digital-art-artw_preview_e2cd

Just like diabetes, cancer, allergies, and asthma, depression is considered a disease of civilization. Have you ever wondered why these diseases are so pervasive nowadays but were unheard of within indigenous cultures and tribes? It’s because we weren’t meant to live our lives like this- flooding our stress-receptors with trivialities while consuming poisoned food after a long work-day behind a computer screen. 4 Ways To Read People’s Energy And Increase Your Emotional Intelligence

For some, reading people accurately is a gift they already possess. For others, it is something that needs a fair amount of fine-tuning. Several factors contribute to our perception of others, and knowing the cause for our distorted readings, will undoubtedly assist in making them more precise in the future.

Emotional intelligence is something which we grew up learning to strengthen, or to stunt. If you were told not to cry as a child, or taught to negate your own emotions with responses like “I’m fine,” you are prone to be less receptive to others’ emotional state than someone who grew up discussing their feelings.

David Caruso, PhD, a well-known psychologist, Assistant to the Dean at Yale University, and co-author of the Mayer, Salovey, Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test, says being taught to hide the very thing which makes us human can have disastrous effects later-on in our adult life.emotional healing4

The things we consider day-to-day activities can also affect our ability to accurately read others. A recent study published in Computers in Human Behavior explains what happens when we remove screen-based media and communication devices from our lives and replace them with physical, and personal connections instead: Continue reading

7 Common Misconceptions About Wiccans and Witchcraft

It’s amazing how many misconstrued assumptions about something can turn into “fact” when enough people repeat them. Witchcraft and Wicca are looked at with questionable, and oftentimes worrisome glances due to the amount of misinformation floating around out there.

As someone who practiced Wicca for over a decade, I would like to set the record straight about a few of the more widely-spread inaccurate misconceptions. Keep in mind, as with any other religion, there are bound to be some aspects left up to debate.

First, let’s take a look at what Wicca and witchcraft really are before we go on to clarify what they aren’t.

Wicca and witchcraft have much in common, but they are not exactly the same. Someone can be a witch, without being a Wiccan, just like someone can be a Christian, without being a Protestant. Wicca has been a recognized religion since the 1950’s, and is based on ancient witchcraft traditions and rituals.

Some of these traditions stem from Celtic origins, but that doesn’t mean Wicca is necessarily connected to the Celts or the Druids, though there are specific Celtic-Wicca denominations within the religion.

Despite what some might think about Wicca, it is actually a very peaceful and harmonious way of life. They see the universe as a balanced entity and promote oneness within all living beings and things. In fact, practicing Wicca is what brought to me my spiritual path; there are many similarities between Wicca and spirituality. You’ll see what I mean, as I continue to shine light on the subject at hand.

Wicca can be practiced either in a coven, or on your own. If you’re not one for social gatherings or don’t know where to find a local coven, I recommend Scott Cunningham’s book, “Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner” This book contains everything you need to know for living life magically, spiritually, and wholly attuned with nature.shutterstock_323994410

Now that we’ve gone over the very basic definition of Wicca, let’s get down to those misconceptions. All of which, I have heard far too often in life.

6 Important Things To Remember When Loving A Virgo

As a Virgo, I can tell you that the majority of the astrological assumptions made about us are bang-on. I’m normally not one to jump on the bandwagon of descriptive personality traits, but I’ve caught myself nodding my head in agreement over the commonly mentioned characteristics- controlling, critical, obsessive, and a bit overly-honest. These traits make relationships with us very interesting, and knowing how to handle these traits will undoubtedly improve the bond between you and your Virgo partner.

1. Unpradictability is a No-Go
Virgos prefer their life to have some semblance of order and routine. While we can have moments of spontaneity, most of the time we want to know there is a next step, what it is, and how to get there.Romantic-Relationships

If you offer to take your Virgo partner or friend out for dinner and they decline, it isn’t because they don’t love you or don’t want to go, but rather they have other things planned ahead already.

Keep in mind, changing plans isn’t easy for a Virgo because of how much they schedule for themselves on a daily basis. Loving a Virgo means you need to allow them to find stability where they can, and as an Earth sign, stability is very important.

2. Perfectionism vs. Improvement
A common word found in descriptions of Virgos is “perfectionist.” I can’t whole-heartedly agree with that, and would say we are more “improvement-ists.”

It might come across like your Virgo partner is nit-picking, or trying to make things perfect, but what they are really doing is finding ways to improve their life, and yours. Virgos find joy in being useful, and will show their love by helping you in many different ways (even ways you may not realize).

Sacred Geometry Art For Indigo Children By Artist Pilar Zeta

Even though you might not have heard the name Pilar Zeta, chances are you have seen her artwork somewhere before.

Hailing from Argentina, Pilar Zeta is a self-taught artist who incorporates geometry, cubism, and bright colours into an eclectic display of pure genius. In other words, imagine if a 1980’s acid trip and an album cover from the 5th dimension had a baby- that’s Zeta’s artwork

. She identifies herself as an Indigo Child, and has used her personal journey through metaphysical transformation as her inspiration for her pieces.

Zeta’s love for sacred geometry heavily-influences her work, along with her fascination of time travel, mystical teachings, ancient art, and spiritual consciousness.

She has worked on pieces for Jimmy Edgar, as well as several other musical artists, like Everything But The Girl, Ministry Of Sound, and most recently, Coldplay. Just last year, Zeta was hired as the art director for the Head Full Of Dreams album by Coldplay, and spent the entire year collaborating with the band.

Below, you will see a few of her album covers and personal pieces, but I highly recommend you take a look at her website and view the entire collection. Plus, there is a moon widget on the upper right-hand corner which tells you the current lunar phase. Check it out!

Speak With Love: How Your Words Literally Restructure Your Brain

The words you choose to use can literally change your brain.

Dr. Andrew Newberg, a neuroscientist at Thomas Jefferson University, and Mark Robert Waldman, a communications expert, collaborated on the book, “Words Can Change Your Brain.” In it, they write, “a single word has the power to influence the expression of genes that regulate physical and emotional stress.Toward Digital Encryption

When we use words filled with positivity, like “love” and “peace”, we can alter how our brain functions by increasing cognitive reasoning and strengthening areas in our frontal lobes. Using positive words more often than negative ones can kick-start the motivational centers of the brain, propelling them into action.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, when we use negative words, we are preventing certain neuro-chemicals from being produced which contribute to stress management. Each and every one of us are initially hardwired to worry; it’s how our primal brain protects us from dangerous situations for survival.

So, when we allow negative words and concepts into our thoughts, we are increasing the activity in our brain’s fear center (the amygdala), and causing stress-producing hormones to flood our system. These hormones and neurotransmitters interrupt the logic and reasoning processes in the brain and inhibit normal functionality. Newberg and Waldman write, “Angry words send alarm messages through the brain, and they partially shut down the logic-and-reasoning centers located in the frontal lobes.” Continue reading
