The Psychology of Positively Impacting Those Around Us

It’s fairly normal to grow glum during the winter months or feel stressed and anxious about everything there is to do. Many people suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) when there is less daylight and it becomes cold. SAD can make people depressed and anxious.

There’s a lot we can all do to be more positive and uplifting. Here are some steps to take to bring more positivity and peace into your own life, and to spread those qualities around. Continue reading

9 Activities Linked to a Longer Life

UCLA biologists have found a gene that can slow the aging process in the entire body when activated in specific organ systems.  While working with fruit flies, these scientists activated a gene known as AMPK that is an important energy sensor in cells; which gets activated when cellular energy levels are getting low.

dna_2759155b“AMP-activated protein kinase—an energy sensor that regulates all aspects of cell function. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a sensor of energy status that maintains cellular energy homeostasis.” – D. Grahame Hardie

In the study scientists found that increasing the amount of AMPK in fruit flies’ intestines increased their lifespans by about 30 percent.  This puts them living around 8 weeks instead of the average 6 weeks.

This is like the average person who lives to be almost 80 to around 104 years.   What is also interesting is that not only do the fruit flies live longer but they were healthier as well.

Now imagine if we applied this genetic technique to someone who is already supposed to live to be over 100 years old?

There is a whole group of people, known as Centenarians, that have lived to be over 100 years old. We have found a short documentary about two Supercentenarians, from the Spice Mountains of South Western India who have lived to be over 110!  Check it out below!

If you found that interesting there are rumors that a man in China lived to be around 250 years old! Li Ching Yuen was an herbalist who practiced Qigong and said his secret to long life was to possess the following traits in your life:

  • Tranquil mind
  • Sit like a tortoise
  • Walk sprightly like a pigeon
  • Sleep like a dog

In addition to that list here are 9 Activities that are linked to a longer life!

© Copyright 2010 CorbisCorporation1. Being Spiritual–  Having some sort of spiritual practice or belief has been linked to longer lives.  You don’t have to be a specific religion or even believe in God to qualify for this category.  Having a reverence for life and believing in something more than yourself is enough to enjoy the benefits of a longer life.

2. Health or Healing knowledge– As you heard in the video above both of our Supercentenarians were known for their knowledge and ability to heal others.  Perhaps the knowledge of healing isn’t only for ourselves.  Perhaps science will find a spark of longevity in those who take the time to ease the suffering of others. How the Impossible Becomes Possible

What was once believed to be an irreversible law of physics, the second law of thermodynamics, simply confused the impossible with the improbable.

Let there be light!

[shareaholic app=”share_buttons” id=”5111567″]

“Murphy’s law is often cited as a form of the second law of thermodynamics (the law of entropy) because both are predicting a tendency to a more disorganized state.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murphy’s_law

Entropy, Murphys law, is however only one side of the equation, just as matter is in a constant motion and appears to become more disorganized over time, there is also the seemingly impossible organization of what ‘was’ into the miracle of life.

The proof of this discovery?  Life itself, the most improbable of probabilities.

valleyoflife

The essence of life brings order and structure to that which breaks down.

Imagine a plant, that grows from a seed, structuring the chaos of the ingredients all around it, into breath, a brilliantly complex geometric puzzle of life.

You are that which is living, that which brings order to chaos. You are the majesty of the order of the universe.

Rejoice, YOU are the impossible, become possible, the improbable 1 in infinity, become YOU.

Let there be light.

Permaculture Can Save the Planet.

With our modern world full of rampant consumerism, pollution, and the destruction of the environment  happening at a dangerously rapid pace, it’s becoming painfully clear we need to start doing something different.  I could go on and on all day listing the stuff that’s messed up with this planet right now, but this post isn’t meant to bring you down sooo…   Let’s focus on the positives!

What we can do about these problems we face today?  What are the solutions?

wemeThat’s where permaculture comes in.   The word Permaculture comes from the words “Permanant” and “Culture”, it means what it sounds like; creating a permanent culture.   I hope to share with you the same feelings of hope, inspiration and determination that studying permaculture gives me.

Permaculture is based on the ideas that we are all connected, that we can look to nature to find solutions to the problems we’re facing today and we can conduct our lives in a better way that is not only sustainable, but regenerative; healing the planet and promoting abundance and health.

I started my permaculture journey after stumbling upon a really great website (openpermaculture.com)  dedicated to the subject.  I started watching the free videos they offered and fell so hopelessly in love with the ideas presented that I enrolled in the Permaculture Certification class they offered, deciding this was the direction I wanted to take with my life.

The Secret (Full Documentary)

My life changed dramatically at the age of 19 when I first saw this movie. In fact, so much so that I annoyed the tar out of EVERYONE because I couldn’t stop talking about it. I was so excited, the idea that I could be the creator of my reality, that I could make choices and decisions that could rapidly change and affect the world all around me, and that my thoughts and emotions also had some level of affect on my reality as well.

In regards to this movie, I’ve come to realize that even though this movie talks about life as if you can just change it overnight with a simple mindset change, it just simply doesn’t work that way, at least not always. The most important thing is that when you change your thoughts, you change your actions. You change the way that you do things, and you question the way that you are doing things in order to achieve the goal that you are trying to create. Continue reading

University Professor Discovers The Secret Life of Plants

[shareaholic app=”share_buttons” id=”5111570″]

Did you know that some plants communicate through signals in their roots? And some plants have co-dependant relationships with other plants?  Some even signal to one another when danger is around.

Even crazier, some plants actually call in the predators of the bugs that are eating them.  You know, the “enemies of my enemies are my friends” style.

When we think about plants, we don’t often associate a term like “behavior” with them, but experimental plant ecologist JC Cahill wants to change that. What Plants Talk About teaches us all that plants are smarter and much more interactive than we thought! – PBS

The University of Alberta professor maintains that plants do behave and lead anything but solitary and sedentary lives.  This is a brilliant documentary that was shared with me recently by a friend i met in Denver, CO! A must watch video, share it with everyone! If you want to learn more, here’s an article on Huffington Post all about how plants think and communicate with each other! Now, all of these sources are just the tip of the iceburg.
